Founded in 1947 by Erling Persson, H&M
The story began in Västerås, Sweden, where the first store was named "Hennes," meaning "hers" in Swedish. Initially, the store exclusively sold women’s clothing. But in 1968, Hennes expanded its offerings by acquiring Mauritz Widforss, a hunting and fishing equipment retailer, which introduced men’s and children’s clothing into the mix. This pivotal moment led to the brand’s current name: H&M.
H&M played a significant role in pioneering the concept of fast fashion. Unlike traditional retailers, H&M adopted a model of quickly turning around new designs inspired by the latest trends, making them accessible to the masses at competitive prices. This approach revolutionized the industry and cemented H&M’s position as a trendsetter.
In recent years, H&M has taken significant strides toward sustainability. The brand has launched initiatives like the Conscious Collection, made from eco-friendly materials, and introduced garment recycling programs to reduce waste. H&M also collaborates with global designers and artists, blending innovation with creativity to bring unique collections to its customers.
Today, H&M operates in over 74 countries with more than 5,000 stores worldwide. Beyond clothing, the brand has diversified into home goods, beauty products, and even premium collaborations with luxury designers. With a mission to make sustainable fashion accessible to all, H&M continues to shape the future of the fashion industry while staying true to its roots.
